Finding great Mexican cuisine in Anchorage can be a hit or miss proposition. I found a place off the beaten path that hits a home run. That place is Los Arcos.
Los Arcos has been in the same place for 17 years, at 2000 East Dowling Road. A sedate and unassuming building to the south of the road, this local restaurant serves up some of the finest Mexican food in Anchorage.
With a generous helping of relaxed hospitality, Maria and Toby Gallo welcome you to their family-run establishment. Ample parking greets the patron. Warm salutations with a quick seating please the weary traveler seeking sustenance.
Newly expanded but with the same wonderful selections on the menu, this is a local’s secret.
First to arrive at the table is a choice of hot or mild salsa and a basket of fresh chips. Service is prompt and the menu choices seem almost endless. The restaurant is filled with patrons who have been coming here for almost two decades. One couple I spoke with has been patronizing Los Arcos for lunch every week for the past 10 years.
For starters I just had to try the award-winning guacamole. This stuff is fantastic, made-from-scratch three times a day, so you can be assured that it will always be fresh and delicious. I managed to smuggle the recipe out under my jacket. You really must try it at home.

Los Arcos Anchorage, Alaska
A must try, shrimp cocktail

One of the best-kept secrets at Los Arcos is the shrimp cocktail. This mouthwatering treat contains 12 jumbo shrimp perfectly immersed in avocado, Pico de Gallo and fresh lime juice. A meal unto itself, this dish alone is worth another visit.

Owner Toby Gallo has been cooking since he opened Los Arcos in 1990. Gallo learned the secrets to excellent Mexican food from his mother while growing up in Guadalajara Mexico.

"I am always excited to be in the kitchen,” Gallo said. "I like to do things right."

Gallo does things right in his kitchen. One of my favorites is the Tijuana taco, a taco filled with beans, rice, cheese and shredded beef wrapped in a soft tortilla and then grilled to perfection. Another is spinach enchiladas. Or, if you are in a spicy mood, give the chicken chipotle a try. All the entrees are served in generous portions that will leave you with a smile on your face and little room in your belly.

The best part about all the dishes is that they are hand-made and fresh. Sauces are produced as needed to insure only the best quality reaches your table.

Having worked up a thirst, you have 24 beers and 35 different kinds of tequila to choose from. A great selection compared to most other places. Feeling adventurous? Try a special house drink like a Mariposa: rum brandy, lemon and orange juice. It's just the right mix to cut through your deliciously spicy meal.

Los Arcos, whether you are looking for that quiet evening out or just a pleasant diversion for lunch, this is the place. It's a local's secret, but it won’t stay that way for long.
