In a small unassuming strip mall at the bottom of Huffman lies a Funky little restaurant. The answer to midtowns organic strong hold, The Tap Root Café has carved out a niche in South Anchorage.
The atmosphere is casual and it seems that at every turn a tiny nuance is revealed. The mood feels like you are in Girdwood, Relaxed. The pace is unhurried and the staff friendly.
Lunch at the Tap Root Café is casual. Place your order at the front counter and it will be delivered to your table. There is something for everyone on the menu. From the grilled eggplant sandwich to Cilantro Chicken Raditori and several house burgers to boot.
The dinner scene is full service, complete with flowers on the table. Live music adds to the setting. Check the web site for venues. Better yet just sign up for email updates and have them delivered to you alaskataprootcafe@yahoo.com
There is free wifi at the Tap Root Café and world music is always in the background to sooth away the rush of the day.
If you want to get your feet wet try the daily soup special. The soups here are good. Unique and varied and when combined with half a sandwich it makes for a great meal.
Five entrée specials are featured weekly they begin on Tuesday and run thru Saturday.
If you get the chance I recommend the Chicken Fettuccine. This delicious dish is topped with a sherry and basil crème sauce and garnished with melted blue cheese. Yum! I also had the chance to try several sandwiches. My favorite, The Girdwood; Freshly made Humus, avocado, Swiss cheese, tomato, marinated red onions, cucumbers, sprouts and oregano dressing on wheat bread, this is a hit.
Check out the yam fries, these wedges are good and good for you. By far my favorite dish was the Bella Salad. Fresh greens, walnuts, tomatoes and raspberry vinaigrette topped with a grilled, sliced Portobello mushroom. Beautifully simple and a snap to make, I procured this recipe for you to try at home.
If you like beer this is the place for you. A large selection of Belgian ales awaits and several special selections are featured every couple weeks. There are beer tastings and new release party once a month. Curious as to what is available there is a “Beer Book” at the front counter that contains all the information that you can browse to make an informed decision.
Not in a beer mood, fresh juices and wheatgrass round out your beverage selections. There is also a great variety of teas to choose from and my glass was always filled.
Want a change of pace and scenery? Let your hair down or leave your dreads up and head on over to the Tap Root Café. Not assuming can sometimes lead to some great surprises. Never hurry, never a worry. Come as you are and see what this place is all about. |
