A new year, a new dump of powder, a new resort owner, a new eatery. What a great start to what promises to be a great year. Take advantage of the snow-laden slopes and grab your deck and head on down to Girdwood. It’s your day, so enjoy. Whether you like to be the first in to Christmas Chute or just cruise the Bowl, make the most of it and have some fun. Just make sure that when your legs say done and your belly begs for attention, you visit Girdwood’s newest restaurant, The Silvertip Grill. Located on Hightower Road next to the Crow Creek Mercantile, this place is long overdue for the ’Wood. Finally, a smoke-free restaurant that serves top-shelf comfort food. This is just the kind of place where you can take the family after a day on the slopes. The creation of Judd Crosby, Silvertip Grill has it all. From eggs to ribs, Greek salad to bacon-wrapped Mahi Mahi, there’s a dish here for any palate. Crosby is a familiar face in Girdwood; many of you may recall he spent the last four years at the Double Musky. Crosby moved to Girdwood in the summer of 1992 and never left. His resume includes the Sitzmark, Seven Glaciers the Aurora and Maxes. He always wanted to own his own establishment and last summer, on a chance visit to the old JJ’s, Crosby realized his dream: JJ’s was for sale. "I told them on the spot that I wanted the place, Crosby said. “I saw a need in Girdwood for a family-oriented, non-smoking restaurant where people could enjoy comfort food with out the usual noisy crowd.” There are fun activities throughout the week at the Silvertip Grill. Sundays finds music with Andy Mullen, on Tuesdays it’s family movie night starting at 6 p.m. After 10 p.m. you might find an adventure flick on the widescreen TV. Wednesday features a free poker tournament with Texas hold'em. The lucky winner receives a gift certificate to the Silvertip Grill. With breakfast served all day, it’s the perfect place to ease in to the weekend. The standard fare is offered along with weekly specials that have included Belgian waffles or blueberry pancakes. Check the specials board or plan ahead by visiting the web site. Don’t forget to try a thick cut of apple wood smoked bacon.

The lunch and dinner menu is ample and includes hearty entrees such as baby back ribs. There are a variety of sandwiches such as Silvertip Grill’s signature Ruben — a monstrous mouth-watering treat served on marbled rye bread. All the bread is baked fresh daily by Café Croissant. The club sandwich is out of this world and includes Darby’s secret sun-dried tomato macadamia nut pesto on sourdough bread. You may recall Darby from Aloha Alaska. He has passed on his closely held secrets to Crosby for you to enjoy. General Manager Jamie Weeks is hard at work to ensure you get the best meal possible for your money. I asked him what sets the Silvertip Grill apart from other establishments: “The food is good here, and it’s because we care,” he said. He is right, and you can taste the difference. Weeks is always coming up with exciting new specials. From crab cakes to Italian reindeer sausage lasagna, there is a great meal awaiting any hungry skier or boarder. The chili is always on and the flavor is awesome. I liked this epicurean delight so much I waited till he had his head turned and snuck the recipe out to my truck. There are seven beers on tap and vary from Midnight Sun to Sierra Nevada. In addition, there is a large selection of imported bottled beers including several Belgian Ales. Ten wines by the glass round out a great selection of beverages and may be found on a board right next to the specials. Free Wi-fi is also offered at the Silvertip Grill. Not in the mood to sit at a table? You can belly up to the Grill’s unique bar, made from Girdwood spruce. Hand crafted, it is a thing of beauty. Desserts often vary but if you get the chance, try the pineapple upside down cake with ice cream. When is the last time you had that? Enjoy that great day on the slopes and when you’re looking for a ski après without the ruckus, search no more. The Silvertip Grill in Girdwood is now open and serving up comfort in a friendly, fun atmosphere.
