Fatty’s, just the hearing the name awakens fond memories. Located in the “ alley” behind the Denny’s on Kuhio Avenue in Honolulu, “Fatty’s” has always been a part of my Hawaii.
Established in 1979, Fatty’s Chinese Kitchen has for nearly three decades been a beacon to those in search of cheap eats, adventure or the just plain hung over.
You could call it a hole in the wall but it is much more than that. Serving Chinese comfort food at very reasonably prices Fatty’s is a welcome time out in between the numerous activities of Waikiki. |

| The counter at Fatty’s Honolulu |
|
For your dining pleasure there are two options.
Want to stay on the go? Order from the steam table where you will always find the hot and ready Sweet and Sour Pork, Beef & Broccoli, Pineapple shrimp and Shoyu Chicken. Daily specials rotate and you can choose between rice and Chow Mein to accompany your meal.
Have some time to dive on in? There is a counter inside with space for 10. If you choose to dine in it is a good idea to avoid peak lunch and diner hours to insure your seating. There is always a warm camaraderie of folks at the counter. Whether local or the first time tourist, everyone is here for the good food and the notable show from the kitchen. Flames, steam, and delicious odors combined with orders being called out in Chinese create an unparalleled atmosphere. Without much imagination one can practically in vision being seated in a Hong Kong restaurant. This place is great.
You can ask for a menu or just read it off the wall. |

| Malaysia noodles |
|
One my favorite selections is the Malaysia noodle plate. I spent many years in Kuala Lumpur and I can assure you, this is the real deal. Wide egg noodles stir fired with shrimp, pork, spring onions, sprouts, broccoli and egg in yellow curry sauce make this dish a timeless standard.
Why not try the crispy pork with rice, or if you’re early enough for lunch, the baked fish special is worth a look. Now that is inside info.
Fatty’s Chinese Kitchen has always been one of my favorite spots to eat in Honolulu. A single visit is not enough and I predict you will be back. This is one Trailside adventure that you can’t pass up.
Fatty’s Chinese Kitchen. Make it a part of your Hawaii. |
